WORKING FOR YOU

Public Safety: Combating Loose & Dangerous Dogs

Loose and dangerous dogs are a public safety issue in many parts of District 7 and our city. In December 2024, Mayor and Council unanimously passed my policy to address loose and dangerous dogs. There is no excuse for dog attacks in our community, and I took bold action to improve safety for everyone. My new policy keeps residents safer by:

  • Increasing fines for negligent dog owners who let their dogs roam free.
  • Mandating that any dog picked up by Animal Care Services (ACS) will be spayed or neutered at the owner's expense.
  • Strengthing protections for residents who report a dangerous dog in their neighborhood by allowing them to remain anonymous.

Improving Infrastructure

Cracked streets and potholes shouldn't be part of daily life, and my team has worked diligently to deliver meaningful improvements. These efforts included:

  • Securing $12.2 million to repair 143 streets and upgrade streets throughout the district.
  • Filling over 2,000 potholes to create safer and smoother commutes
  • Dedicating over $4.8 million for adding new sidewalks, filling sidewalk gaps, and improving street markings.
  • Installing 18 new stop signs throughout our neighborhoods to combat speeding, plus upgrading 16 signs to flashing stop signs to enhance safety.
  • Completing over 300 infrastructure projects in District 7 during fiscal year 2024.

Supporting our Seniors

Caring for our seniors remains one of my top priorities. In 2023, we launched the Senior Assistance Pilot Program – an initiative that ensures older adults can resolve code violations with dignity and support rather than penalties. Through this program and beyond, we've worked to make District 7 a more compassionate place for our elders by:

  • Providing resources and direct assistance to help older adults address code violations quickly and effectively.
  • Ensuring seniors feel valued by covering guidance instead of punishments for unintentional violations.
  • Building stronger connections through regular visits to senior centers and listening to their concerns directly.

In 2024, I successfully pushed to make this a permanent program to help our older adults, many of whom are on a fixed income, avoid code violation fines.

Improving Our Greenspaces

Spending time outdoors is just as beneficial for your mental health as it is for your physical health. I'm proud my office has:

  • Successfully secured a $3.25 million grant for upgrades at Woodlawn Lake Park. This is the largest federal grant awarded to a single park in San Antonio's history and will be matched for a total of $6.5 million for improvements.
    • We're kicking this off with planing over 450 trees throughout the park.
  • Invested $1.7 million for O.P. Schnabel  Park for new restrooms, a bicycle skills course, a new trailhead plus a new perimeter path.
  • Added shade structures at O.P. Schnabel Park and Jane Dubel.

Serving You

The core of what we do is taking care of our neighbors. Constituent Services and Public Safety are my top priorities, and together, we have:

  • Resolved over 2,00 constituent services cases for our neighbors.
  • Attended over 450 neighborhood and HOA meetings
  • Conducted over 250 site visits with neighbors to address their concerns
  • Sent weekly email newsletters and quarterly printed newsletters
  • Held monthly "Coffee with the Councilwoman" events in every corner of the district
  • Held quarterly Presidents Roundtable meetings with our neighborhood leaders
  • Convened three Public Safety Town Halls
  • Hosted 30+ Utility Office Hours for residents at our field office
  • And for our most vulnerable neighbors, Isuccessfully pushed CPS Energy to expand the eligibility for their Affordaibility Discount Program – helping save residents hundreds of dollars of electricity bills throughout the year.
